OEM and ODM organized the way we actually run them: six product domains, each with its own understanding, boundaries and fastest path — and a deep-dive on the composites domain where most overmolding projects live.
A quote is only as fast as its inputs. Most custom-silicone inquiries take three or four email rounds to become quotable — this page exists so your first message is the one we can answer same-day.
01 — Two modes
The vocabulary, before the families
OEM and ODM change what the first message should contain
Both modes can apply inside the same product family — a masking kit by your thread list is OEM, a matrix plug with your logo is ODM. That is why each domain below splits the two instead of pretending one word fits both.
OEM · you own the design
Custom manufacturing to your specification
You send a 3D file, a drawing or a sample to match. We engineer, tool and produce under your part number. The conversation is technical: tolerances, material, environment, volumes. A complete drawing gets a fixed quote in 48 hours.
You pick from 554 catalog specs and customize what matters: colour, marking, hardness, packaging — light customization from 300 pcs, +3 days. The conversation is commercial: pick, brand, ship. Catalog parts leave in 10 working days.

02 — The domains
Every sub-family links to its own page
Six domains, each with its manual attached
Each row is one domain of the product matrix: what we understand about it, the sub-families it contains, and what OEM and ODM mean for that domain specifically. Read the middle column for the process position, the right column for how the two modes differ here.
You have an OEM part numberDomains 02, 04 and 06 — the cross-reference answers within 24 hours, or tells you it cannot.
You have a photo or a sampleDomains 01, 02 and 05 — send the object itself; we reverse the geometry from it.
You have a drawing or a 3D fileAll six — DFM in 48 hours, a fixed quote in writing, T1 samples in 30 days.
Domain 01
Dissimilar-material composites
Silicone bonded to plastic, metal, glass or ceramic in one cure
The bond is decided before the mold closes: substrate grade, filler content and surface prep — not the silicone. One row below says no.
Rollers by drawing with TIR callout; cores from your drawing or your old roller.
ODM
Re-manufacturer private label; rebuild service under your brand.
03 — Deep dive
Silicone + ABS / PC / stainless / metal / glass / ceramic
Dissimilar-material composites, substrate by substrate
The domain most overmolding quotes get wrong. Each row is a working answer — preparation, bond route, process and the watch-out that decides the batch.
CompositePreparationBond routeProcessWatch-out
Silicone + ABSWipe clean; plasma optionalSelf-bonding LSR2K injectionABS softens near 95 °C — the cure profile is lowered and the cycle accepted
Silicone + PCPlasma or primerSelf-bonding grades / primer2K injectionAnneal to release molded-in stress; regrind PC never
Silicone + stainless 304 / 316Grit-blast + primerPrimerTransfer / injectionBond tested per lot; the prepared surface must stay unsealed
Silicone + aluminium (anodized)Keep the anodize unsealedPrimerCompression / 2KA sealed anodize kills the bond — call it out in the drawing
Silicone + glass / ceramicFlame or plasma treatPrimer or mechanical lockCompressionThermal shock: the cure ramp is slowed for the substrate
Silicone + PP / PE—Not bondable—Surface energy 29–31 mN/m: mechanical interlock only, or change the substrate
Peel acceptance is cohesive failure, not adhesive — typical 3.5–8 N/mm (ASTM D429) depending on substrate and geometry. The PP/PE row is printed on purpose: a quote that hides it is a quote you pay for twice.
04 — The communication ladder
Wherever you start is fine — starting higher is faster
Four levels of input, four speeds of answer
There is no minimum entry ticket. You can arrive with just an idea and still get a real answer in 24 hours. But every level up removes one email round from the schedule — the ladder is cumulative.
Level 0
An idea
+ Application and where the part works
+ Rough quantities per year
Reply 24 h · a fit answer and the exact questions that move you to Level 1.
Level 1
A reference
+ OEM part number, sample or photo
+ Machine or cluster it fits
Reply 24 h · a cross-reference match or a spec proposal, and sample terms.
Level 2
A drawing
+ 2D with tolerance callouts
+ Material, media, temperature range
Reply 48 h · a fixed quote: tooling, unit price by volume band, MOQ.
Level 3
A 3D file
+ STEP / IGES / STL
+ Environment and volume bands
Reply 48 h · a free DFM report and T1 in 30 days.
The top of the ladder is the whole conversation in one message: a 3D file with tolerances, environment and volume bands. That message gets a DFM report in 48 hours and a first article in 30 days — and it is the only input set we never have to ask a follow-up question about.
05 — What slows a quote down
Five patterns, seen weekly
The five things that add a week to every project
None of these are your fault — they are the default habits of every sourcing inbox. They are listed here because each one is fixable in the time it takes to write the email.
01 Tolerances left blankWe quote safe: looser than you need and pricier than necessary. Write the two numbers that matter — we will challenge them in DFM if the physics disagrees.
02 Application kept secretTemperature, media, surface, load. A compound is chosen against environment, and “general purpose” is not one.
03 No volumes on the tableWithout an annual or per-batch number there is no volume band — so every price you receive is a placeholder, not a quote.
04 Branding asked after the POLogo, packaging and colour raised post-order are a re-quote, not an add-on. Put them in the first email — light custom is +3 days when it is known up front.
05 “Urgent” without a first-article planVulcanization has a floor no purchase order can move. An urgent order with agreed acceptance samples moves faster than an urgent order without them.
